URBAN+ FUN FACT (UFF)
In 1879, Brisbane installed its first public drinking fountain to commemorate the city’s new reticulated water supply from the Enoggera Reservoir. Costing £370, this ornate fountain featured lion-head spouts that continuously flowed with fresh water, replacing the need for shared cups and barrels.
Strategically placed in Queen Street, it provided clean drinking water to the public, including schoolchildren, marking a significant advancement in public health and urban infrastructure.
